Axolotl Kingdom
Care & Kindness: Your Royal Starter Guide
A happy kingdom starts with a prepared home. This starter guide helps you plan before choosing an axolotl.
Your first little royal: start here
- Choosing your first axolotl: decide whether an axolotl fits your household and compare listing options.
- Plan your axolotl budget: account for the animal, aquarium, supplies, and ongoing care.
- Get ready for arrival: review aquarium readiness, delivery-day planning, and live-arrival claim requirements.
Prepare the palace first
- Learn the aquarium nitrogen cycle and fully cycle the habitat before adding your animal. Clear-looking water alone does not show that an aquarium is ready.
- Plan filtration, water testing, dechlorinated water, routine maintenance, and reliable temperature monitoring.
- Provide a safe layout with hiding places. Consider your animal’s size when choosing the tank, decor, and substrate.
Keep the kingdom comfortable
Axolotls need cool water. Keep their aquarium around 60°F (16°C). Plan cooling for your home and monitor temperature rather than guessing by touch. Dim lighting and places to hide help create a comfortable habitat.
Plan the royal menu
Age and size matter when choosing food and feeding frequency. Suitable worms and nutritionally appropriate axolotl pellets can be part of a feeding plan. Ask about the individual animal’s current diet before it arrives, and remove uneaten food.
Before your companion arrives
- Confirm your aquarium is ready and you can maintain it consistently.
- Check current ownership and shipping rules where you live.
- Find a veterinarian experienced with amphibians before you need one.
- Review the animal’s listing and any arrival instructions carefully.
